Foot Drop Treatment: Regain mobility, comfort, and independence with our personalized approach.
🧠Understanding Foot Drop
Foot drop is a condition caused by weakness or paralysis of the muscles that lift the front part of the foot. Common causes include:
- Compression of the peroneal nerve
- Side effects from diabetes or chemotherapy
- Pinched nerve in the lower back
- Stroke
- Multiple sclerosis
Depending on its cause, foot drop can be temporary or permanent. It increases the risk of falling, reduces walking endurance, and slows down gait. Some individuals develop compensatory strategies, such as lifting the leg higher or moving it in a circular motion.
⚙️Our Therapeutic Approach
At Neuro-Concept, we combine dorsiflexor muscle retraining with functional electrical stimulation (FES) protocols to optimize recovery.
Stimulation devices send small electrical impulses to the ankle muscles, promoting smoother, more natural movement while walking.
In parallel, targeted strengthening and proprioception exercises help improve motor control and joint stability. This approach can sometimes eliminate the need for rigid orthotic devices in favor of more dynamic, mobility-enhancing solutions.
🔋Feedback Technologies
When sensory feedback is impaired, real-time motion feedback technologies can significantly enhance rehabilitation. These systems provide live insights into movement quality, helping guide proper motor learning.
🔧 At Neuro-Concept, we use state-of-the-art equipment such as:
- G-EO System – a robotic-assisted walking device simulating natural gait
- KINÉ-SIM – an interactive motion simulator evaluating and correcting ankle movement in real-time
These technologies offer precise, motivating feedback and are used under the supervision of our experienced physiotherapists.
🦾Customized Orthotics
In some cases, a custom orthotic is recommended to support the foot during walking. Depending on the patient’s needs, different types are available:
- Static orthoses – pre-molded or custom-made, usually rigid
- Articulated or dynamic orthoses – with springs or hinges to allow greater ankle mobility
Some orthoses may be covered by Québec’s public health insurance (RAMQ) if prescribed by a medical specialist, such as a physiatrist.
🤝At Neuro-Concept, At Neuro-Concept, our physiotherapists and physiatrists support you every step of the way. Then, one of our partner orthotists will take the necessary measurements or perform the molding. This ensures you receive comprehensive care, from assessment to implementation of the solution.
