It is characterized by an involuntary increase in muscle tone, often accompanied by spasms, stiffness, and resistance to movement.<\/p><hr data-start=\"478\" data-end=\"481\" \/><h3 data-start=\"483\" data-end=\"525\">\u27a4 <strong data-start=\"489\" data-end=\"523\">A Clear Scientific Explanation<\/strong><\/h3><p data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"932\">In a healthy body, movements are finely regulated by a balance between activating and inhibiting signals transmitted by the nervous system.<br data-start=\"665\" data-end=\"668\" \/>When a neurological injury occurs (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neuro-concept.ca\/en\/neurological-conditions\/stroke\/\">stroke<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neuro-concept.ca\/en\/neurological-conditions\/multiple-sclerosis-ms\/\">multiple sclerosis<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neuro-concept.ca\/en\/neurological-conditions\/spinal-cord-injury\/\">spinal cord injury<\/a>), this balance is disrupted. Muscles become rigid or resistant, making certain actions difficult.<\/p><p data-start=\"1637\" data-end=\"1659\"><strong data-start=\"1637\" data-end=\"1659\">Signs may include:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"1703\">Difficulty bending or extending a limb<\/li><li data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"1703\">A sensation of stiffness, especially during quick movements<\/li><li data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"1703\">Fixed or flexed postures<\/li><\/ul><hr data-start=\"1798\" data-end=\"1801\" \/><h3 data-start=\"1803\" data-end=\"1845\">\ud83d\udd01 <strong data-start=\"1810\" data-end=\"1843\">Clonus: Rhythmic Muscle Jerks<\/strong><\/h3><p data-start=\"1846\" data-end=\"2008\">Clonus, on the other hand, is a rhythmic involuntary movement: the muscle contracts and relaxes rapidly and repeatedly, often triggered by pressure or stretching.<\/p><p data-start=\"2010\" data-end=\"2032\"><strong data-start=\"2010\" data-end=\"2032\">Signs may include:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li data-start=\"2036\" data-end=\"2103\">Rapid, jerky trembling of the foot when the heel is pushed upward<\/li><li data-start=\"2036\" data-end=\"2103\">Uncontrolled repetitive movements after a stretch<\/li><li data-start=\"2036\" data-end=\"2103\">Usually localized (ankle, knee, wrist)<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2202\" data-end=\"2395\">Both clonus and spasticity are caused by <strong>disrupted motor control circuits in the brain or spinal cord<\/strong>.
